The balustrade element (1) has an internal cavity (2) and at least one opening (3) near the cavity, whereby a light source (4), especially a light emitting diode, is arranged in the cavity with which the cavity can be illuminated. A diffusing arrangement (5) is arranged between the light source and the opening. The light source can be switched on and off.
