PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately position a read head and/or a write head to the data track of a magnetic storage tape inside a tape drive at a low cost by a simple method. SOLUTION: The present invention provides servo systems and accompanying methods for determining the relative position of a head (16) to the magnetic storage tape (10) utilizing existing data structures on the magnetic storage tape (10) and the position of a tape end edge. In one example, a method for positioning the head (16) includes a step of detecting a read signal from a read element associated with the head (16), and the read signal is generated in response to a reference data track stored on a magnetic storage medium (10). The method further includes a step of optically detecting a position of an end edge of the storage medium (10), and a step of repositioning the head (16) relative to the storage medium (10) in response to the position of the end edge of the storage medium (10) and the read signal.
