The invention relates to a method for retracting a bed (100) provided with a wire mattress frame (110) which bears a mattress, is supported by a base and is movable (arrow E) from a horizontal using position (sleeping position) to a retracting position (storage position) and vice versa (arrow C). The inventive method consists in bringing the wire mattress frame (110) of said bed (100) into the horizontal sleeping position which is elevated with respect to a floor in such a way that a sufficiently high space is formed thereunder in order to receive other furniture elements and/or working equipment (300) arrangeable in the room in addition to said bed (100). A lifting device which makes it possible to carry out the variant of the inventive method consisting in bringing (arrow C) the wire mattress frame (110) from the retracted storage position into the using sleeping position thereof by a vertical sliding movement and vice versa is also disclosed. Said invention can be used for small room furniture.
