An apparatus for releasably retaining and positioning a golf tee 3 in the ground has a body 1 with one or more tee head abutment surfaces lying in a first plane and forming a contact portion for engaging the head of the golf tee. At least one limb 4 extends from the body and with a distal end 5 that is located outwardly of the contact portion. The distal end of the limb is moveable, preferably against a resilient bias, toward the contact portion. The bias may be provided by resiliency inherent in the limb. The body preferably has a recess. The contact portion is located in the recess, surrounded by a substantially annular wall. A closeable cavity in the body can house golfing accessories. A level indicator 13 may provide an indication of a deviation of the first plane from horizontal.
