A bipolar electrosurgical instrument (12) for cutting and scaling tissue comprises first and second jaw members (4, 5) movable between open and close d positions so as to be capable of grasping tissue therebetween. The first jaw member (4) includes first and second coagulating electrodes (13, 15) on its inner surface, and an insulating member (9) separating the first and second electrodes. The first jaw member (4) also includes a third cutting electrode (19) on an outer surface separate from the inner surface, and the second jaw member (5) has a tissue-contacting surface (23) which is electrically insulating over its entire surface. The electrosurgical instrument is capabl e of selectively causing coagulation of tissue between the first and second electrodes (13, 15), and/or the cutting of tissue contacted by the third electrode (19).
