PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting method of a high-pressure discharge lamp particularly for an image apparatus capable of instantaneously relighting even the high-pressure discharge lamp anytime by turning on a switch again immediately after turning it off. SOLUTION: In a transition state where a lighting state is changed over to an extinction state, lamp power supplied to electrodes 3 and 4 is reduced to a level without extinguishing arc discharge and kept at the level for a while; thereafter the temperature of the lamp is lowered to a value capable of sustaining glow discharge, and thereafter the glow discharge is started and kept for a while; and then current supply to the electrodes 3 and 4 is cut off when the temperature of the lamp is set below a value capable of relighting it.
