PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector with an obstacle detecting device capable of surely detecting the existence of an obstacle whatever position between a screen and a projector the obstacle exists at. SOLUTION: A test pattern is projected to the screen 70 from a projection device 20 by using both of a 1st test pattern and a 2nd test pattern provided with a plurality of horizontal lines which divide the length in the longitudinal direction of the video of the test pattern projected from the device 20 to the screen 70 into a plurality of the same length by division numbers whose prime factors do not coincide with each other when they are resolved into the prime factors, and the picked-up images of two kinds of test patterns received by a solid-state image pickup element 32 via a light receiving lens 31 arranged at the perpendicularly upper part of a projection lens 21 on the front of the housing of the projector 10 are analyzed by a picked-up image analysis part 33 so as to detect the presence/absence of the obstacle.
