PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record data in one magnetic tape in different track widths. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape MT 1 is subjected to tracking of a magnetic head H 1 by using servo signals SS 1 read from previously recorded servo tracks ST. The servo tracks ST are adjacently recorded in a plurality over the entire width or a portion in the transverse direction of the magnetic tape MT 1. Address signals AD 1 indicating the addresses for specifying track positions and the positions in the longitudinal direction of the magnetic tape are recorded at prescribed intervals separate from the servo signals SS 1 within the respective servo tracks ST.
