PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent mis-distinction due to superposition of noise, shift of cam angle signal from a regular position in relation to crank angle signal by a certain factor or the like at the time of cylinder distinction of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: If cam angle signal from a cam angle sensor is generated during an interval of tooth lack part determined by using ratio of latest interval time and a previous interval time based on generation time of crank angle signal detected by a crank angle sensor in a time sequence, regular reference position in a crankshaft rotation direction is determined (YES in step S107). On the other hand, if cam angle signal is not generated during latest interval time determined as a tooth lack part before cylinder distinction of the internal combustion engine is performed, cam angle signal or noise signal or the like generated outside of interval time of the tooth lack part is neglected (NO in step S107).
