The internal combustion engine has a microwave source (3) and input means (4,2) for the inputting of first microwaves in a combustion chamber (1) by which a non-thermal plasma is created. Free electrons with an energy of more than 9.8 eV are produced in the gas volumes gathered from the non-thermal plasma. The inputting of the first microwaves into the combustion chamber is synchronized with the running of the engine in such a way that the non-thermal plasma is produced within the expansion cycle or exhaust cycle with a piston position within the range of 90 degrees to 270 degrees after top dead center. An independent claim is included for a method for the reduction of harmful emissions of an internal combustion engine.
