The invention relates to the use of prostane derivatives of the general formula (I), in which X1 is a -CH2-CH2- or trans -CH=CH-; X2 is a straight-chained or branched saturated alkylene group with 1 to 6 carbon atoms; X3 is a -CH2-; X4 is a -CH2: X5 is a -C=C-R2; R1 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group with 5 or 6 carbon atoms or a phenyl group; R2 is a straight or branched-chain, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group with 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R3 is a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R4 is -H; in which the -O-R3 group is a or .beta.-stable; and of theirs salts with physiologically tolerated bases, if R1 is a hydrogen atom, for the production of a medicament for the treatment of chronic polyarthritis.
