A machine for producing a wire tie having at each end a loop and a rearwardly extending leg with the loop bent out of its original plane of formation comprises support means to hold a predetermined length of wire in a horizontal position, a pair of wire forming units disposed one adjacent each end of the wire, each such unit comprising a jaw assembly to clamp a wire near its ends with a predetermined length projecting free from the jaw assembly, a first forming tool reciprocably and rotatably mounted and arranged to advance, engage the free length of the wire and rotate to form a loop and a rearwardly extending leg, and a second forming tool reciprocably and pivotally mounted and arranged to advance, engage the formed loop and move angularly to bend the loop out of its original plane into a plane inclined to the original. A quadrant 13, Fig. 2, is rocked from a position beneath a trough 12 containing wires 10 to carry one wire, in a groove 14, to a position between rollers 19, 20. The roller 19 is driven and the roller 20 is moved towards the roller 19 to grip the wire 10 and feed it into a slot 31, in bar 30, Fig. 3, closed by a flap 32. The flap 32 is then swung down to drop the wire into V-shaped supports 35 and into driven rollers 40 which feed it axially against a stop plate of fixed bending means 45. This sets in operation the means 45 and adjustable bending means 46 for the other end of the wire. The bending means each include, Fig. 4, a pair of jaws 1, 2 to grip the wire, a tool 57 having a head 58 having an axial peg 59 and an offset peg 60 and a tool 69 having a bifurcated head 70. The head 58 is raised by a pneumatic cylinder 63 and then rotated by a rack 66 to bend the end of the wire in a loop. The head 70 is moved forward by a pneumatic cylinder 72 and rotated by a rack 74 to bend the loop out of its original plane. The formed wire is ejected by fingers 48.
