942,727. Drying sugar &c. AMERICAN SUGAR REFINING CO. July 19, 1962 [Aug. 2, 1961], No. 27809/62. Heading F4G. [Also in Division B1] Sugar 2 or like crystalline material is dried in a rotary drum drier 10 having lifter blades (not shown) by contact with a stream of heated and dry gas from an inlet 20 and generating in the gas from a source 32 sound vibrations at a frequency between 500 and 30,000 cycles/sec. and at an acoustic power level of at least 0.001 watts/cm.<SP>2</SP>. The sound wave generator 32 may be a siren, air-jet whistle or the like, and generates sound waves at substantially at least 2 watts/pound of wet sugar. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), several sound generators may be axially disposed within the rotary drum to direct the sound waves radially outwards into contact with the sugar as it is tumbled by vanes and in a further modification the sugar is dried in a tunnel drier having a horizontal vibrating screen by a heated gas stream and sound waves from generators mounted in the roof of the tunnel.
