The device has a plate (10) with four holes (12) via which four screws pass through the plate. The holes are situated in pairs on two lines that are parallel to each other and separated by a distance (H+E), where H is height of vertebral body and E is thickness of inter-vertebral space. A rectangular bore is provided for passage of a tissue retractor. A longitudinal axis of the bore is spaced at equal distance between the lines.
