The method involves forecasting a gross mass flow of nitrogen oxide for determining whether it is possible to have an extended lean burn mode, during a homogenous mode. An internal combustion engine is switched from the homogenous mode to the extended depletion mode if the forecast reports that the flow is less than a predetermined threshold. Information related to the depletion mode is provided to a diagnostic control.
