<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably detect the position in the direction orthogonal to the carrying direction of a sheet (paper). <P>SOLUTION: A side edge detection sensor 62 is made to standby in a standby position C for A4SEF corresponding to the size of the paper P1 before a first piece of the paper P1 is carried in, moved to a stopping position F for A4SEF according to the passing timing of the paper P1 and a side edge of the paper P1 is detected. The side edge detection sensor 62 is moved to the standby position C for the A4SEF corresponding to the size of this paper P2 after the side edge of the first paper P1 is detected and before the second piece of paper P2 is carried in.
