PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine speed control device for an internal combustion engine capable of detecting the engine speed of the internal combustion engine from the output of an AC generator to be driven by the engine without breaking a controller, and agreeing the engine speed of the engine with the instructed value. SOLUTION: A speed detection signal generation unit 8 comprises a light emitting diode LD1 which emits light when the output voltage of the positive half-wave of an AC generator 1 to be driven by an internal combustion engine and a photo-coupler 8A having a photo-transistor Ph1 to perform the switching operation by detecting the light emitted by the light emitting diode LD1. The signal generated by turning on/turning off the photo-transistor Ph1 is given as a speed detection signal Vn to a microprocessor 5A. The engine speed is agreed with the instructed value by controlling an actuator to operate a throttle valve 6 so that the engine speed obtained from the speed detection signal Vn is agreed with the instructed value.
