PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyethylene terephthalate that can give a packaging material for vessels that has a reduced amount of acetaldehyde that may emit bad smell or cause anxiety about deterioration of flavor and taste of a content with productivity improved, and has excellent transparency, heat resistance and mechanical strengths without worsening hue. SOLUTION: In this method for producing the polyethylene terephthalate, a polyethylene terephthalate polymer is subjected to solid-phase polymerization and the resultant polymer is brought into contact with a potassium hydroxide aqueous solution of 1 ppm to 10 wt.% concentration.
