PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel composition for diesel engines having a moderate rubber swelling property even if the sulfur and aromatics contents are reduced. SOLUTION: The fuel composition for diesel engines is the one whose: (a) sulfur content is≤10 mass ppm; (b) 10% distillate temperature is≥190°C; (c) flash point is≥60°C; (d) density is≥0.82 g/cm<SP>3</SP>; (e) total aromatics content is≥10 vol% and≤24 vol%; (f) content of aromatics with two or more rings is≤4 vol%; and (g) polarity index PI is≥202 and≤208. Herein PI is indicated by the expression: 0.2×total aromatics content+3.2×Ha+1.8×Hα+1.9×Hβ+1.4×Hγ, wherein Ha is a ratio (mass%) of hydrogen derived from the aromatic rings, occupying in all the hydrogen contained in the total aromatics, and Hα, Hβand Hγcorrespond to a ratio of hydrogen that bonds to the carbon ofα-position,β-position, orγ- or upper position of the substituents of the aromatic rings, that occupy in all the hydrogen contained in the total aromatics, respectively.
