PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a door opening and closing device for a vehicle capable of changing over the operation between the hinge mode and the slide mode and nevertheless assuring a high space efficiency. SOLUTION: The door opening and closing device for the vehicle capable of changing over the operation between the hinge mode and the slide mode selectively is structured so that a first link mechanism 5 and a second link mechanism 6 are installed in series between the vehicle body 3 and a door 2. The first link mechanism 5 consists of a control arm 10 held on the door 2 side in the hinge mode operation and on the body 3 side in the slide mode operation and a first 11 to a third arm 13, while the second link mechanism 6 consists of the third arm 13 to serve commonly to the first link mechanism 5, a fifth 15 and a sixth arm 16, and a base 19. When the control arm 10 is fixed to the door 2, the door 2 makes swinging in a single piece with the first 5 and second link mechanisms 6.
