PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a square battery having a structure suitable for being made to be thin to a flat shape and a structure having high sealing capability and high electrolyte leakage preventing capability, and to provide a manufacturing method capable of preferably manufacturing the square battery. SOLUTION: A joining plate 10 is installed in a portion between an electrode group 4 on the inside of a battery case 1 and a sealing body 12, both end surfaces of the joining plate 10 are joined to a pair of long side plate parts 1a, 1a, and the sealing body 12 is placed on a supporting ledge part 3 at the lower end of an enlarged opening part 2 of the battery case 1 through an insulating gasket 18. The insulating gasket 18 is longitudinally and laterally compressed by a crimping work of the opening edge part and a shrinking work of the enlarged opening part 2 of the battery case 1. The crimping work of the insulating gasket 18 is conducted by two step process of preliminary sealing inclining inward the opening edge part of the enlarged opening part 2 and finishing sealing bending inward an opening end peripheral part.
