PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use a high strength correlation component separated from a correlation peak appearing in the case of principal to others. SOLUTION: Image data on a fingerprint to be matched are subjected to a two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to create matching Fourier image data. The matching Fourier image data are combined with registered Fourier image data created by the same processing, and the composite Fourier image data are subjected to amplitude suppression processing, followed by DFT. From a correlation component area in the DFT-subjected composite Fourier image data (correlation data), n pixels which are higher in correlation component strength are extracted. The correlation component, highest in strength of all the correlation components of the extracted n pixels, is set as the correlation peak. A zero or negative weight is applied to the correlation components of pixels, separated by a predetermined value or larger from the correlation peak from among the extracted n pixels. The average of the correlation component strengths of the n pixels, including the zero- or negative-weighted pixels, is computed as a correlation value. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
