PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the deterioration of an imaging surface in a charge-retentive member, such as a charging device photoreceptor, while stably maintaining a voltage V<SB>H</SB>by a charging device, such as a bias charging roll (BCR). SOLUTION: At the time of operating an electrostatographic printing apparatus including the charge-retentive member providing an imaging surface and the charging device for imparting a charge on the imaging surface, a power supply to apply a bias is applied and the bias is applied to the charging device according to the power supply application. The bias is a DC offset AC waveform including a burst modulation waveform. To generate the bias, the burst frequency of, for example, a frequency F2, is generated and the gate on and off of a carrier frequency F1 are caused by the burst frequency F2.
