PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a luminance control method which easily and appropriately performs luminance control of a display means. SOLUTION: An image display device 1 drives the display part 12 by the lowest driving level under environment light and measures luminance of the display part 12 when the luminance control of the display part 12 is performed. In addition, the display part 12 is driven by the lowest driving level and a driving level for measurement, test charts with different gradation are displayed and the luminance of the display part 12 is measured by every gradation under darkroom environment. Then, a LUT for correcting the gradation is created based on a luminance value at the lowest driving level under the environment light and monitor characteristics calculated from luminance values measured by every gradation.
