PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent temperature increases at the ends of a thermal fixing roll, thereby preventing degradation in image quality caused by the temperature increases of the ends, and a decrease in productivity. SOLUTION: A fixing device includes the thermal fixing roll 1, a pressure roll 2 pressed against the thermal fixing roll 1, a heat-resistant belt 3 wrapped along the outer circumference of the pressure roll 2 and moved while held between the thermal fixing roll 1 and the pressure roll 2, and a belt stretch member 4 stretching the heat-resistant belt 3, and fixes an unfixed toner image 5a formed on a sheet material 5. The image forming apparatus is equipped with the fixing device. The belt stretch member 4 stretches the heat resistant belt 3 by applying tension to the heat-resistant belt 3 between the pressure roll 2 and it, thereby wrapping the heat-resistant belt 3 along the thermal fixing roll 1 and forming a fixing nip. Gap rollers which make an adjustment so that a gap between the belt stretch member 4 and the thermal fixing roll 1 which hold the heat-resistant belt 3 is greater the thickness of the heat-resistant belt 3 are disposed at both edges of the belt stretch member 4 and outside of a paper passage area.
