PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an ethylene-α-olefin-based random copolymer in high activity when copolymerizing ethylene with anα-olefin or copolymerizing ethylene with theα-olefin and a nonconjugated diene in the presence of a transition metal catalyst system. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the copolymer by polymerizing (i) ethylene with (ii) a 3-20Cα-olefin or polymerizing the component (i) with the component (ii) and (iii) a polyene, polymerization is carried out in the presence of five kinds of catalyst components of (A) a transition metal complex, (B) an organoaluminum compound, (C) a halogen-containing compound which is a chain organic group-containing carboxylic acid derivative having an unsaturated bond, (D) a halogen-containing compound which is not a carboxylic acid derivative and (E) a component acting as a Lewis base in the system.
