<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion compensating method for optimally reducing the deterioration in sensitivity due to wavelength dispersion of an optical fiber in a multi-relay system consisting of a plurality of relay amplifiers, and to provide an optical transmission system hardly suffering transmission quantity deterioration due to wavelength dispersion of a transmission path without directly measuring a wavelength dispersion value of the transmission path. <P>SOLUTION: In the multi-relay optical system consisting of a plurality of relay amplifiers, a deterioration amount due to wavelength dispersion caused by extracting a clock amplitude equivalent to a bit rate and a specific frequency component from an optical waveform after optical transmission is observed, dispersion compensation is performed in a dispersion compensation device to be mounted on each optical relay amplifier so that the residual dispersion value may be small, thereby minimizing the amount of deterioration in sensitivity in a distribution compensation device to be mounted on a reception optical amplifier. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
