PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device capable of protecting copyrights of various data without using encryption of a mass storage medium to an HDD. SOLUTION: This device comprises a storage medium 6 for storing various pieces of information; a host controller part 5 for controlling the storage medium 6; a communication control part 4 for controlling communications between the host controller part 5 and the storage medium 6; and a reproduction processing part 7 for data stored in the storage medium 6. The storage medium 6 has a protective area 9 and a non-protective area 8. At the time of reproducing the data according to an instruction from the host controller part 5, the data are moved from the non-protective area 8 to the protective area 9, so that the data moved to the protective area 9 is not accessible from an external device.
