PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of preventing a wire for managing scanning movement from being dislocated even when 1st and 2nd scanning optical units are moved over respective reference positions. SOLUTION: The 1st and 2nd scanning optical units 4, 5 are supported by the stretched wire 9, and when driving force of positive and reverse rotation is applied from a stepping motor 10 to a rotary shaft 8 which is coaxial with a drum 80 around which the wire 9 is wound, the 1st and 2nd scanning optical units 4, 5 can be moved for scanning between the reference positions and inverted positions. The one-end part of the wire 9 is extended approximately rectangularly to the scanning movement of the 1st and 2nd scanning optical units 4, 5 on the outside of the reference positions. A projection 40b allowed to collide with the one-end part of the wire 9 before colliding with a body casing 2 when the 1st and 2nd scanning optical units 4, 5 are moved over the reference positions is formed on a 1st scanning frame body 40 of the 1st scanning optical unit 4.
