PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic display device exhibiting excellent electro-optic characteristics. SOLUTION: The electrophoretic display device equipped with a substrate, an electrode layer, a picture display layer, a transparent electrode layer and a surface layer, is characterized by having a microcapsule type picture display layer including microcapsules housing black particles, white particles and a dispersion medium to disperse them wherein void ratio of the microcapsules observed form the surface layer side is 17% or less.
