PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fully heat a red heat member to become red hot regardless of the size of a combustion chamber and a change in the heating value in a heater having an atmosphere of a fireplace. SOLUTION: A combustion chamber 2 is disposed above a burner 1, and a heat ray transmission part 3 is formed at least at a part of a wall of the combustion chamber 2. The red heat member 4 is provided inside the combustion chamber 2. The red heat member 4 is composed of false coal pieces 6 formed of ceramic foam to imitate coal block pieces. A red heat member holding body 5 is provided in the combustion chamber 2, and a space A continuous with a section directly above the burner 1 is formed inside the red heat member holding body 5. The false coal pieces constituting the red heat member 4 are mounted to the red heat member holding body 5, and a clearance 7 is formed between the adjacent false coal pieces 6. Combustion gas generated by the burner 1 is diffused into the space A, and the combustion gas passes through each clearance 7 between the false coal pieces 6 and is diffused into the combustion chamber 2 while heating each false coal piece 6 from the lower part.
