PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for advantageously producing an azlactone compound useful as an intermediate for a pharmaceutical, etc. SOLUTION: This method for producing a compound expressed by general formula (II) (M is H, Na, K or Li; P is H, an alkyl or the like; and wavy line indicates that the compound is a cis-isomer, a trans-isomer or a mixture thereof) comprises hydrolyzing a compound expressed by general formula (I) (R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are identical to or different from each other, and are each an alkyl, or may form an aliphatic heterocyclic ring together with N adjacent thereto) or its salt in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide.
