The invention relates to the use of polyalkylene oxide for preventing the thickening of aqueous polymer dispersions that are stabilized with protective colloids. The invention is characterized in that during the production of aqueous polymer dispersions by means of radically initiated polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers while in an aqueous medium and in the presence of one or more protective colloids, one or more polyalkylene oxides that, in the case of alkylene oxide mixed polymers containing alkylene oxide units in a statistical distribution, are added before or during the polymerization.
