Electrolyzer for producing hydrogen and oxygen comprises a housing containing a sealed electrolysis cell block. Oxygen and hydrogen separation chambers are located within the cell block and operate at the electrolysis system pressure; a coupling connecting the cell block to the housing is provided to supply and withdraw electrolysis media; and the free space in the electrolyzer serves as a buffer chamber supplied with buffer fluid at a pressure above the electrolysis system pressure. Electrolyzer (1) for producing hydrogen and oxygen comprises a housing (2) containing a sealed electrolysis cell block (5) in the form of a stack of electrolysis cells (4) with anodes and cathodes, anolyte and catholyte circulation systems, an oxygen separation chamber and a hydrogen separation chamber. The separation chambers are located within the cell block and operate at the electrolysis system pressure; a coupling (3) connecting the cell block to the housing is provided to supply and withdraw the media involved in electrolysis; and the space in the electrolyzer not occupied by the cell block serves as a buffer chamber (8) supplied with buffer fluid at a pressure above the electrolysis system pressure.
