PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of obtaining an excellent read image without deviation and density unevenness. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with: a first carrying member 5 for carrying an original S inserted from an original insertion port to a read section 4; a first read means 9 for reading part of an image of the original S carried by the first carrying member 5; a second read means 11 for reading an image of other parts than the part of the image read by the first read means 9; an image composite means 22 for composing the image read by the first read means 9 with the image read by the second read means 11; and a second carrying member 7 for carrying the original S whose reading is finished in a direction opposite to the original insertion port. The first and second carrying members 5, 7 respectively have a plurality of carrying rolls 5a, 7a in the main scanning direction and the carrying roll 5a of the first carrying member 5 and the carrying roll 7a of the second carrying member 7 are provided on an extension line of a joints between a read range of the first read means 9 and a read range of the second read means 11 in the subscanning direction.
