PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable easily and rapidly projecting a suitable video image on a screen while mounting an anamorphic lens. SOLUTION: The projection type display apparatus 1 has a liquid crystal panel 11 in which pixels each independently driven are arranged in a grid in the horizontal pixel number panelH and vertical pixel number panelV, and an incident light is modulated according to an input video signal for each driven pixel; a projection lens 13 for magnifying the light modulated by the pixels at a predetermined lateral/longitudinal magnification ratioαa; a control unit 15 for deciding pixel to be driven; and a driving section 14. A horizontal pixel number VpanelH is obtained as any smaller one among the panelH or the panelV×αs/αa, and a vertical VpanelV is obtained as any smaller one among the panelV or the panelH×αa/αs. Then, a driving horizontal pixel number ApanelH is obtained as any smaller one among VpanelH or the VpanelV×αi/αa, and a driving vertical pixel number ApanelV is obtained as any smaller one VpanelV or VpanelH×αa/αi.
