PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect clock oscillation frequency anomaly and clock oscillation termination anomaly among a plurality of clocks used in an encoder. SOLUTION: The encoder comprises the first clock generating part 1 which operates when a main power supply is turned on; the second clock generating part 15 which operates using a back-up power supply 14; a one-revolution absolute data detecting part 13 and multi-revolution data detecting part 16 which output rotation position data corresponding to motor rotation; a clock anomaly detecting part 17 which detect anomaly of the first clock from the first and second clocks; and a data transmitting part 18 which sends and receives data from each of the detecting parts.
