A first signal transmitter (ST) (1) is built into a remote control (RC) (2) that only uses a signal for identifying an appliance (4), in which a receiver (3) is incorporated for receiving the signal. A second ST (5) incorporated in the appliance transmits a recognition signal (RS) to the RC with its receiver (6) for receiving the RS.
