<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device at a low cost for detecting a pedestrian with high accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: An infrared ray camera 2 captures a reflected light from an object in front receiving a near infrared ray emitted in front from a projector 3, a peripheral supervisory control unit 1 applies image processing to a near infrared ray image to extract a density region in excess of a threshold density. The density regions wherein the aspect ratio of the extracted density region is within a prescribed range are extracted as pedestrian object regions, a density average and a density variance of images of the pedestrian candidate regions are calculated, and the remaining region is made the pedestrian region by excluding the pedestrian candidate regions discriminated to be structures on the basis of the density average and the density variance. The peripheral supervisory control unit displays a camera image whose pedestrian region is subjected to enhancement processing by an HDD unit 4 onto a front window. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
