A transmission mode (TM) along with a transmission speed within the TM is recognized from a receiving light-induced pulse width (RLIPW). Slightest output mode-related pulse widths or output pulses corresponding to the RLIPW are generated. First and second pulse edges are detected to shape a pulse for a digital output signal corresponding to their time difference. An independent claim is also included for a system for changing optical receiving pulses into electric output pulses with a photodiode coupled parallel to means of generating a bias voltage.
