PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device which reduces power consumption and noise, and improves contrast. SOLUTION: The display device is provided with a light source consisting of one or more LED elements and a control means for controlling the quantity of light emitted from the LED element of the light source in accordance with an image signal value. An area in a video plane is divided into a plurality of divided areas, and for example, the light source is provided with LED elements respectively corresponding to the divided areas in the video plane of a display element, and the control means controls the quantity of light emitted from a LED element corresponding to each divided area in accordance with an image signal value in a divided image corresponding to the divided area.
