PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carboxylic acid, by which a carboxylic acid obtained by reacting an olefin with carbon monoxide and water is readily recovered from an extraction liquid phase of organic solvent. SOLUTION: In the method for producing a carboxylic acid by reacting an olefin with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a catalyst composed of sulfuric acid or sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid and/or a metal compound, the reaction product is extraction-treated with n-hexane and/or cyclohexane, separated into an oil phase and a water phase, the oil phase is washed with water, neutralized with≤3 times equivalent of an alkali aqueous solution as much as a sulfate radical remaining in the oil phase and then a carboxylic acid is recovered from the oil phase.
