Monosodium glutamate is prepared by cultivating a glutamic acid-producing microorganism in a nutrient medium containing an assimilable carbohydrate source and an assimilable nitrogen source (viz. ammonia, ammonium hydroxide or urea), maintaining the pH of the medium within the range 6 to 9 with a pH-controlling, nitrogen-providing material (viz. ammonia, ammonium hydroxide or urea), and after substantial L-glutamic acid is produced, adding sodium ions to the medium in the latter stage of fermentation in sufficient quantity to produce a fermentation product containing monosodium glutanate. Suitable sources of sodium ions are sodium hydroxide, sodium lactate or sodium carbanate. Specified microorganisms are Brevibacterium divaricatum and microccus glutamicos.ALSO:A feed supplement comprises a concentrated fermentation product containing monosodium glutamate obtained by cultivating a glutamic acid-producing microorganism in a nutrient medium containing an assimilable nitrogen source (viz. ammonia, ammonium hydroxide or urea), maintaining the pH of the medium within the range 6 to 9 with a pH-controlling, nitrogen-providing material (viz. ammonia, ammonium hydroxide or urea), and after substantial L-glutamic acid is produced, adding sodium ions to the medium in the latter stage of fermentation in sufficient quantity to produce a fermentation product containing monosodium glutamate. The feed supplement may be obtained as a powder and, if desired, converted to pellet or tablet form. Examples illustrate the p addition of the feed supplement to conventional animal feed formulations. |
