An ear protector comprises a substantially sound-proof shell 10, Figs. 1, 3, carrying a diaphragm 24 in which is mounted a transducer 26 which, in use with the ear protector surrounding the outer ear, converts sound energy received from the ear canal into electrical energy for transmission to a point outside the shell 10. The transducer may also be used as an earphone, a switch 32 switching from one function to the other. A band 14 of soft material contacts the head of the user. The shell 10 is in two parts secured together at flanges 18 by screws 20 or cement. The diaphragm 24 is a leather disc and is fixed between the flanges 18. The transducer 26 is held in the diaphragm 24 by a flange 28 on the transducer and a retaining ring 29. The shell 10 is lined with sound-deadening material. In a modification, Fig. 7, the shell 10 contains a microphone 36 and a receiver 38.</p> |
