PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying a carbonaceous material by at least partially removing transition metal-based impurities from the carbonaceous material containing a nanoscale carbon tube or a nanoscale carbon tube including the transition metals or the alloy in a void to decrease the content. SOLUTION: The method of purifying the carbonaceous material containing the nanoscale carbon tube or the nanoscale carbon tube including the transition metal or the alloy in the space in the tube and the transition metal-based impurities includes (a) a step for mixing the carbonaceous material (i) with a ligand compound forming a soluble metallic complex by the reaction with the transition metal based impurities (ii), (b) a step for separating a liquid component containing an unreacted ligand compound and the metal complex dissolved in the unreacted ligand compound from a mixture obtained in the step (a) and recovering the carbonaceous material and if necessary (c) a cleaning step.
