PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for compensating for the luminance of a color signal in a display monitor or a color television. SOLUTION: The method includes: obtaining an allowable luminance ratio of a color signal; obtaining a luminance enhancing ratio of a color signal using the allowable luminance ratio; and compensating for the luminance of the color signal using the luminance enhancing ratio, the allowable luminance ratio being the ratio of a luminance according to saturation when a color signal is represented by four or more multiple primary colors, to a luminance according saturation when the color signal is represented by three colors. Thus, the luminance is relatively increased as the saturation of an input color signal increases, and the luminance is relatively decreased as the saturation of the input color signal decreases, so that the luminance of a color signal having a low or medium strength level is enhanced to suppress image quality deterioration.
