PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable capacity rotary compressor capable of minimizing rotation resistance by making pressure inside a compression chamber where idling operation is performed equal to discharge pressure. SOLUTION: This variable capacity rotary compressor is provided with a hermetic casing and a housing installed in the hermetic casing to define therein first and second compression chambers having different capacities. In accordance with change in a rotating direction of a rotating shaft driving a compression unit inside the first and second compression chambers, compression operation is selectively performed in either the first or second compression chamber. The compressor further includes a suction flow passage variable device for varying a refrigerant suction flow passage so that refrigerant is sucked in a suction inlet port side of the compression chamber where compression operation is performed; high-pressure piping for connecting a discharge side of the compressor to the suction flow passage variable device; and a high-pressure flow passage switching device provided in the suction flow passage variable device and switching a high-pressure passage so as to communicate the high-pressure piping with an inlet port of the first or second compression chamber where idling operation is performed, in accordance with temperature change accompanied by the flow passage switching operation by the suction flow passage variable device.
