The hardtop (1) is assembled of three segments (2, 3, 4) positioned between the windscreen and the rear window which can be slid to the back of the car and stored in a container (6) accommodated in the car boot. The lid (7) of the container (6), ideally also the lid of the car boot, as well as the rear of the roof unit (1) can be released with a mechanism of two swivel mounted levers (11, 12) with hooks at their outer ends operated with a single drive (10).
