PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop an optical switching element which performs fast switching operation while suppressing or preventing a rebounding phenomenon to make the outline of obtained transmitted or reflected light sharp and to provide a thin type image display apparatus by using the optical switching element. SOLUTION: The optical switching element comprises a 1st optical surface 2 and a 2nd optical surface 6 which are arranged in parallel orthogonally to an optical path, displaces the 2nd optical surface 6 by a displacing means to increases or decrease the length of the optical path, and uses change of interfering operation of light accompanying the increase or decrease in length of the optical path to vary the light intensity of the transmitted light or reflected light of incident light, the optical switching element being characterized in that a lower stopper transmission surface 3 limiting the displacement quantity of the 2nd optical surface which is to be displaced is added to the 1st optical surface 2.
