The exhaust gas silencer for internal combustion engines comprises a standard housing (2) which by means of a centrally disposed partition (3) is divided into two side-by-side chambers (4,5) of equal size. At least one partially or completely closable through-hole (10) is provided in the partition, whereby the means for opening or closing the through-hole is operated by a controllable auxiliary motor (12). The motor drives a slide (11) which is movable to and fro between a completely closing position and completely opening position.
